To counter the depressing thought that we’re apparently now only days away from witnessing Pink Floyd closing the Olympics by doing The Hero’s Return (Part II) with Ray Quinn on vocals or something, here’s the dazzling feast for the eyes and ears that is ‘The’ Pink Floyd London ’66-’67, Swinging London film-maker Peter Whitehead’s disorientating portrait of the band in their psychedelic club-hopping days and first tentative forays into the recording studio, set against a rare (and demented) early version of Interstellar Overdrive, and featuring cameos from the likes of Yoko Ono, John Lennon, and lots of girls in very short skirts dancing alarmingly and puffing on enormous joints.
And if that’s not enough, try this performance of Jugband Blues for a Central Office Of Information magazine show syndicated to Commonwealth cinemas, or this larking around to The Scarecrow for Pathe News, or – but of course – the legendary appearance on BBC2′s The Look Of The Week. And if you want to know more about the latter, well, maybe somebody’s written about it in a book…
